Ecobalyse and textile environmental cost in France

France deploys voluntary environmental display for clothing using a shared methodology and the public Ecobalyse tools. Decree no. 2025-957 of 6 September 2025 sets calculation and communication rules in the Environmental Code. From 1 October 2026, a third party may calculate and communicate the environmental cost of a textile reference without prior consent from the brand, subject to the same rules as producers.

Voluntary display, fixed rules

Displaying the environmental cost remains voluntary for most brands. When you communicate it, you must follow the official methodology, deposit the calculation on the public portal, and use the prescribed signage.

If you communicate a score on an environmental impact of a textile product, the official environmental cost must appear with it. Display stays voluntary for brands that do not publish environmental scores.

What changes on 1 October 2026

Until that date, a third party could only publish your environmental cost if you agreed or had already published it on the official portal. After 1 October 2026, that transitional protection ends: third parties may publish using available or estimated data, still respecting article D. 541-243 of the Environmental Code.

Publishing your own calculation first lets you control the underlying data instead of leaving defaults to a third party.

Data to keep per SKU

  • Product type, mass, and material composition with shares.
  • Countries or stages for spinning, weaving, dyeing, and making where the method asks for them.
  • Optional transport, price, and business size fields when they apply to your references.
  • Evidence from suppliers supporting each input, with version history when a supplier changes.
  • URL and date when you publish on the official portal, if you choose to display the cost.

How Product Registry helps

Product Registry stores Ecobalyse-oriented fields per textile SKU, tracks completeness, exports JSON or CSV for your own workflow, and links supplier evidence on the same catalogue graph as PPWR and GPSR. Ecobalyse API scoring is disabled in this deployment (ECOBALYSE_API_ENABLED is false): the app does not call Ecobalyse on your behalf and does not file on the public portal.

Use CSV import to load catalogue data, collect proofs through supplier links, and export inspection dossiers when you need a single pack per reference.

Primary legal text

Product Registry organises evidence and inspection files. It is not legal advice and does not file anything with an authority for you.
