Regulation (EU) 2023/988 on general product safety (GPSR) applies from 13 December 2024 across the EU. This checklist highlights operational records most SMEs need before a market surveillance visit.
What the GPSR expects from you
The GPSR replaces the former General Product Safety Directive. It covers most non-food consumer products placed on the EU market and strengthens traceability, safety information and cooperation with authorities.
You remain responsible for conformity and for any notification you make. Product Registry does not assess products and never submits a dossier on your behalf.
Checklist: core records
- Name and contact details of the responsible economic operator in the EU (manufacturer, importer or authorised representative).
- Product identification: type, batch or serial number, and any other element that allows traceability.
- Technical documentation showing the product meets applicable safety requirements.
- Safety information for consumers, in a language they can understand, including warnings where needed.
- A process to handle accidents, complaints and recalls, including cooperation with market surveillance authorities.
Complaints and Safety Gate
When a product may present a serious risk, you must inform consumers and authorities without undue delay. The EU Safety Gate system is the channel many authorities use for cross-border alerts.
Keep an internal register of every complaint, the triage decision and the evidence you relied on. If you notify authorities, record the date and reference yourself after you submit the pack.
How Product Registry helps
Product Registry keeps catalogue, supplier and packaging data on one SKU record. You can import products with CSV, collect supplier evidence through secure links, run a public GPSR complaint form with an internal register, and export an inspection pack per SKU (PDF summary plus downloadable files).
These features organise your workspace. They do not replace a conformity assessment or legal advice.
Primary legal text
Product Registry organises evidence and inspection files. It is not legal advice and does not file anything with an authority for you.
